Concur

Sargon of Akkad on the week in stupid. Dickheads wanting global ‘blasphemy’ laws. Dickheads getting excised about a Muppet and so much more. Do any of these people step back for a moment and think?

On the other hand, in order for some people to be of above average intelligence, there must be a far greater number below, because that’s part of how we derive an ‘average’.

    1. Then there’s the average, median or mean of ‘functional intelligence’, which by anecdotal observation must be lower still. This can be proven by the observed number of very bright people whose knowledge is trounced by a bunch of chimps, as in this talk by Professor Hans Rosling;

    No, it isn’t. In a large enough sample of the population there will almost certainly be as many above average [anything] as below. Some special situation might skew this observation, e.g. in rowing, a coxed eight will possibly have eight members of the team above the team’s average weight and only the cox below average weight but in general, for most things, it will be close to a 50:50 split.

    1. Well, you’d have to look at an overall distribution graph for a definitive proof. For a given measure of ‘intelligence’ that is. I’ve often found that there is a difference between measured and functional intelligence, just like your car might have two hundred horsepower under the bonnet, but only gets driven to the store for groceries. Like some Ph.D’s I’ve come across; supposedly bright as a stadium light but can’t find their own arse with a map and GPS.
